Artist's statement

I choose subjects that grab my attention and afterwards, keep coming back in my mind's eye. They may suggest a narrative, raise a memory, evoke a feeling, or present a tantalizing challenge to a visual element of painting.

I paint for the pleasure of working with oil colors - their luminosity and complexity, the messiness of mixing them and moving them around on a canvas - and for the challenge of the decision making process of painting.

I love the experience of looking intently at a chosen subject while I paint to make a personal connection with it.  I may discover a significant detail that I initially missed, find new relationships between elements of the subject which enhance its meaning or unity, or develop new ideas about what I want the painting to say.  I enjoy the adventure of beginning a new painting and working to convey my sensory experience of the subject to the viewer.
